An astonishing, and very interesting study, has just been made by Researchers at Ohio State University – that reading a good book regularly can actually make you start to feel the same emotions and behave the same as the character you’re reading about. The Researchers have called this “experience taking”.
When I first read about this, I was instantly shocked. A realisation of “Oh, that’s why I acted like a wizard after reading Harry Potter!” Came into my mind. So OK, maybe it’s not quite that dramatic, but it certainly is interesting. This means that we’re not insane when we read a book and become slightly too involved with the characters. If you start acting like them, and empathising with them, then just throw that in the face of the nay-sayers.
“Well, excuse you, but a new study finds that I’m just “experience taking”.
Many other people feel that the study was slightly unnecessary, and has been obvious for many years. And I can see where they’re coming from. It has been obvious for years. Regardless, it’s nice that it now has a name.
